our story

From silk to synthetics in over 140 years.

Our journey started with Atlas Silk Mills, a manufacturer producing silk yarns and fabrics. Witnessing the changing tides of the silk industry, Nathan Cohen formed Atlas Yarn Company in 1924. This new venture started distributing acetate yarns for the American Cellulose & Chemical Company (now Celanese Corporation). The business thrived under the guidance of Nathan.

Atlas Yarn LLC is a textile distribution company with a history dating back to 1882 in Paterson, NJ.

Following Irving Cohen’s return from WWII, the yarn sales business experienced significant growth. Capitalizing on his expertise in yarns, Irving ventured into the weaving industry with the establishment of Beavertown Weaving Mills in Beavertown, PA. In the late 1980s, Beavertown replaced all the older shuttle looms and installed the latest Sulzer Ruti air jet looms. After the merger with New River Industries in the 1990's, the company became the largest weaver of acetate in the world. The company ran over 1,100 air jet weaving looms in Radford and Riverbend Virginia

Additionally, Irving Cohen started Titan Textile Company to distribute polyester yarns. Under Irving and Stepher Wener's leadership, the company expanded with the strategic acquisition of Duplan, a texturing company based in Dillon, SC. The acquisition allowed Titan Textile to become a prominent producer of textured polyester, textured nylon, draw wound polyester, and sewing thread.

Under the guidance of Bill Cohen, Titan Textile Company in 1976 also began importing various spun and filament yarns, adding to its extensive product portfolio.

In 2023, Atlas Yarn LLC was formed. Today, our company stands as a reliable distributor, catering to the varied needs of the textile industry and manufacturers requiring specialized technical yarns. With our knowledge, rooted in decades of manufacturing and industry experience, Atlas Yarn is dedicated to servicing our customers with quality products at competitive prices.
